A letter i wrote after reading a story.
A man who had no eyes, Diary assignment (diary written by Sirine ) March 28, 1908
Dear Journal,
Today has been terrible; there had been a gas leak in the C shop. I seem to have went blind, because of that I had asked the nurse to help me write this. Her name is Claire, she is a nice lady. Though she might be nice, because of her job, I have not truly forgotten what happened. Betrayal has caused me to wonder what is. As I recall, what happened during this terrible day was that poor Peter, who was about my age and was new. So he did not know anything because he didn’t receive any training. They left him in our hands to help him out. Though the young lad was as stupid as a potato, he could not understand anything. He probably got to working here because of his parents; they might have wanted him to make them money. That is the reason for most of the workers here, they all needed money. That is when Markwarott came in; I respected that man a lot. He was so kind to Peter and gentle. He taught him everything without getting frustrated. Then Peter accidentally hit the release button, which released the gas and someone started screaming. I assume it was from the gas cage. They yelled the gas has been released get out, get out now. We could hear everyone running, upstairs because we were in the basement. We all started heading for the stairs, but I noticed that Peter was on the floor crying. I told him not to worry, and that we should hurry and get out. So I grabbed his hand and we ran upstairs, when we had reached the first floor we had to start crawling because there was gas everywhere. I told Peter to go ahead because I had heard someone calling for help. I crawled back and saw no one. Odd was all I had thought at that moment. I then started crawling faster, I had to get out now, and the gas was spreading faster now. I was so close to the door, then I the door seemed to be going further back. I turned my head and saw someone pulling my leg, pulling me back. It was Markwarott; he had pulled me back and climbed over me. I was dumb founded. How could the man I respected do that to me? Markwarott did not even look back, he kept moving forward then he got out of the doors. I came to my senses then, this is only natural, and people show their true face in danger. I knew I had to get out, and then my eye sight started to blur. I figured that the gas was going to make me go blind if I didn’t get out. I just didn’t know it would happen to me, right now. I thought I would have gotten out. With the sight I still had I crawled to the door. I got out of the door and into the darkness. My eyesight was gone. I fell unconscious, and woke up in what seemed to me as a hospital. That’s when I heard footsteps; it seemed my hearing had gotten stronger. The nurse Clair came in and gave me the news. She said my eyesight would be gone forever. It will never come back. I knew this was the outcome. So I didn’t really overreact, though I am sure I would have been allowed because any normal person would have cried or screamed. So that comes to the conclusion of my day. The only thing I have left to say is that I will not let the darkness swallow me whole; I will fight it and become one with power.
Yours truly, Parsons
